Congratulations to Madison M for receiving the National Gold Award Scholarship for our council! Each Girl Scout council nominated one of their Gold Award Girl Scouts to receive an academic scholarship from GSUSA. Madison, in completing her Gold Award Project demonstrated extraordinary leadership skills, made a lasting and sustainable impact, and addressed a global issue. Madison joins a group of about 100 National Scholarship Recipients out of a possible 4,000 Gold Award Girl Scouts who will be honored at this year's Girl Scouts Change the World event on October 9th.
Madison’s project, Better Future Better Life, worked to bring awareness to an issue women around the world face, a lack of menstrual products. When women do not have access to the needed supplies, they are forced to miss school or work, this has a strong impact on their daily lives. She partnered with the Moon Catcher Project to start a tradition of Moon Catcher days at her school so the students can create reusable menstrual kits. These kits are then sent to different countries such as Ghana, Kenya, Haiti, and Honduras. Madison also serves on the GSNENY Board of Directors as a Girl Member at Large representing the voice of the Girls of our council.
