Course Description:
This intensive, three-day course provides the comprehensive training needed to become certified as an American Red Cross Lifeguard with additional waterfront skills. Participants will learn to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies in both pool and open water settings, as well as administer care until emergency medical services arrive. Training includes surveillance and rescue skills, first aid, CPR/AED, and professional lifeguard responsibilities. Waterfront-specific skills address hazards unique to open water environments such as lakes and ponds.

The course is a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on practice, and water-based scenarios. Participants must attend all sessions, actively participate, and pass all written and practical exams to receive certification.

Prerequisites (Required on the First Day):
Candidates must successfully complete a pre-course skills evaluation, including:

  1. Minimum Age: 15 years old on or before the final day of the course.

  2. Swim Test:

    • Swim 550 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke.

    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.

    • Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds:

      • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.

      • Surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.

      • Return to the surface and swim back to the starting point while holding the object with both hands, keeping the face at or near the surface.

      • Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Participants must pass the pre-course test to continue with the lifeguard training.

What to Bring:

  • Proof of age (e.g., ID or birth certificate)

  • Appropriate swimwear and towel for each day

  • Reusable water bottle, lunch, and snacks

  • Notebook and pen for classroom sessions

  • Sunscreen and weather-appropriate clothing for outdoor sessions

Note: This is a physically demanding course. Participants should be in good health and prepared for active in-water training and rescue practice in a variety of conditions.
